Essential Oils for Sore throats.

Welcome to July.

I’ve started July with a painful throat and earache on the left side of my head.

Truly Amazing, I’ve managed to get through all the winter months without picking up any kind of virus or bacteria. Yet, here we are in the summer months ….with a throat and ear that feels like it’s going to explode anytime soon.

Before being introduced to Essential Oils, I would have resorted to taking OTC (over the counter medicines), to alleviate symptoms causing a sore throat. As we all know, these don’t come without their side effects, and also resulting in adding to our everyday toxic load.

Let’s explore the reasons leading to sore throats

A sore throat is a common problem, which is generally the result of an infection caused by a virus or bacteria. Although the pain involved with a sore throat usually goes away by itself without complications in adults, it is important to know when to seek medical intervention.

What Causes Sore Throat?

As noted above, a sore throat can be caused by both viral and bacterial infections. Keeping that in mind, here is some more information on the top 3 causes of a sore throat:

1. Viral infection

Most sore throats are brought on by a viral infection. Someone suffering from flu or colds is likely to have a sore throat. A viral infection cannot be treated with antibiotics; the only way to get rid of this condition is to have plenty of rest supported by other natural therapies that will slowly alleviate the symptoms.

2. Bacterial infection

A bacterial infection may also cause a sore throat. Bacterium like streptococcus pyogenes, diphtheria and pertussis are generally the root cause of a sore throat.

3. Environmental factors

Not all sore throats infections are viral or bacterial in nature. If you are sensitive to mould, animal dander, pollen or other irritants, exposure to these allergens may trigger the accumulation of extra mucus in the throat, which later leads to a sore throat.

How Long Can A Sore Throat Last?

If a viral infection is the reason behind your problem of sore throat, expect it to last for at least 5-7 days. Infections that are bacterial in nature can be cured in 3-4 days. If you are on a healthy diet and drink plenty of fluids, you can get rid of a sore throat quicker with the use of a good essential oil treatment.

When Is The Right Time To See A Doctor?

Most sore throats do not require medical attention. However, get in touch with your doctor if the problem is persistent and if you’ve any of the following symptoms:

  • Breathlessness
  • Joint pain
  • Trouble swallowing
  • Earache
  • High fever
  • Lump in the throat
  • Bloody mucous
  • Hoarseness that lasts for over two weeks

Can Essential Oils Cure Sore Throat?

Essential oils are amazingly beneficial for treating a sore throat as they not only help to alleviate the associated pain, but also battle the root cause of the ailment.

The anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial properties of essential oils are very effective in combating a sore throat and preventing one altogether.

With that said, here are some of the essential oils that will guarantee sustainable results when it comes to getting rid of a sore throat:
